Sybil Craig 1901-89: Modernist
Painter
4 June - 30 July 2006
The first public gallery retrospective exhibition of this
early Australian Modernist painter highlights her wonderful use
of colour and design in a diverse range of media, techniques
and subject matter.
The National Gallery School, Melbourne, gave Craig a sound
training for her popular flower and portrait studies. However,
her association with leading modernists between the wars led
her to pursue her art in a deliberately experimental and spontaneous
way.
Kirsten McKay, the Gallery's curator, has brought together
works from public and private collections around Australia for
this major exhibition which will tour to Geelong and Mornington
Regional Galleries.
